Kansas City is renowned for its rich BBQ tradition, which makes for a prime place for a BBQ Competition. On May 18th, 2024, Ivanhoe Lodge No. 446 hosted their first Kansas City Masonic BBQ Competition. The competition brought an opportunity for Freemasons across the region to come together for a day of charity and community.
A 19-year-old, Brother Mason Sewing, who is an officer of Ivanhoe Lodge No. 446 organized this event. His efforts helped raise substantial funds and demonstrated the value of fresh perspectives and enthusiasm in driving community engagement.
Not only did this event have a BBQ Competition, but had a raffle and food booth to increase their fundraising efforts. It was an impressive display of organization and participation from Masons across the region, all working towards a common goal.
The goal – to support Veterans.
The funds raised were matched by the Masonic Home of Missouri through their Partnering To Honor Program, bringing the total to $18,000. This generous donation was presented at a ceremony held at Ivanhoe Lodge on July 20th and given to Honor Flight Network of Kansas City. The funds paid for over a dozen local veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C., providing them with a meaningful opportunity to reflect on their service and connect with fellow veterans.

It was not just a fundraiser, but a day where members from 10 different Masonic Lodges in the Kansas City Area joined together to support not only Veterans but one another. The event fostered a sense of camaraderie and reinforced the bonds of brotherhood that are central to Freemasonry.
Ivanhoe Lodge No. 446 BBQ Competition can set the scene for many other Lodges to engage their members to make a difference in their community. Together let’s make a difference.
